New Publication.
Up to now the inhabitance records of the Ruegenwaldian District (Rügenwalder Amt) in Pomerania have been published for the years 1648, 1663 and 1732 only. Similar records for nine additional years of the eighteenth century were hidden in the archives of Merseburg for 40 years and not accessable during DDR times. After the German reunification these records were returned to the Berlin archives and made accessible to the public again.
These records for 55 villages were originally put down partly in Old German hand-writing (Suetterlin script), in parts readily legible, but in other parts very hard to decipher. Therefore the authors had these documents filmed and transfered them to a computer version suited for all kinds of genealogical, statistical and historical evaluations, and are now presenting them in form of a book.
Listed in it are the data for the years 1731 (with the farming acreage of all the owners), 1736, 1742, 1748, 1757, 1770, 1775, 1787, 1795 and 1803. These records, with the family names and forenames of the house-holders, the number of their children, servants, other residents, older people, encompass about 220 pages of the book. Other chapters are: local orientation and historial development of the "Ruegenwaldian District", the administrative body, with judicial authorities (Gerichtsvögte), the police officers (Landreuter, sheriffs) and foresters (Heidereuter), the managers of the Royal Domaines and the owners of the mills; all in chronological order. For this purpose other literature sources have been utilized also, to somewhat complete the picture as much as possible.
Altogether, more than 14.000 entries have been accumulated, about 500 different names have been identified and evaluated statistically, put in order according to their frequency, and added as a general index. Many readers who have their origin in this area, will find their names or those of their ancestors in these records. Others interested in genealogy and history will be surprised at the abundance of material and will be able to have deep and authentic insight into the local and social structures of that time. Therefore, this book is an outstanding supplement to the literature about the "Schlawe County" area, published up to now.
We recommend to those interested, to order this book immediately, if possible within the next two weeks, to give us some better idea about the edition requirements. Everybody who wants to make sure to receive a copy, is invited to subscribe.
